Doctor, What’s Wrong With Me?
By Antonio De Jesús Aguado
La Comedia del Universo (The Comedy of the Universe) is currently presenting its new play ¿Qué me pasa doctor? In ten sketches, the troupe satirizes the medical system people have to face in Mexico.
It was Thursday, July 20, when the lights went up the first time. A TV host appeared, accompanied by a beautiful aide. Later an elderly contestant tried to answer some questions correctly to win millions of pesos.
The result was not what the audience expected. A schizophrenic woman crawled onstage and under a table, trying to get professional help by calling Seguro Social (Social Security), but she got lost in the interminable menu of extensions.
In this play, La Comedia del Universo also presents a version of the talks that Hernán Cortés—with Malinche as interpreter—held with Moctezuma.
The staging brings in patients who invent diseases and are cured by doctors who invent their own methods. A psychologist controls people for her own convenience, and a gang tries not to break the law with its behavior.
In ¿Qué me pasa doctor?, the audience remains seated, in nail-biting expectation of an ending that is completely unexpected.
The play will have two more performances, on September 5 and 6, at 7:30pm at the Teatro Santa Ana. Tickets at the box office, 80 pesos.
