Thai foot massage comes to San Miguel

By Joseph Dispenza

In Thailand, it is not uncommon to see people lined up around the side of a temple to receive the healing touch of Thai foot massage and head-neck-shoulder massage. The temple setting emphasizes the unique character of this practice as both a physical and spiritual healing modality.

Thai foot massage is a 2000-year-old therapeutic protocol that originated in Thailand, with inspirations from Chinese and Japanese medicine. It is a massage of the lower legs and feet while the person is otherwise fully clothed.

The benefits of Thai massage include a deep feeling of balance, relaxation, and well-being. It stimulates the lymph system and promotes lymph drainage. It releases toxins and accelerates physical healing in other parts of the body. It also improves self-esteem, increases energy levels, and addresses headaches, sinusitis, stress, and muscular tension.

The simple but effective traditional techniques used in foot massage and head-neck-shoulder massage have been handed down over generations. Today, it is taught in the same way, from father to son, mother to daughter—and it is also taught by Buddhist monks in the temples of Thailand.

When Buddhism reached Thailand in the 2nd or 3rd century BC, temples were built with adjacent dispensaries and medical schools. Massage and other healing arts were taught and applied in the monasteries and within the family.

The influence of reflexology on this therapy plays a major role. Reflexology is based on the premise that on the soles and the top of the feet there is a complete map of the human body. When pressure is applied to various points on the feet, the organs and body systems related to them are stimulated for healing.

Head, neck, and shoulders massage relieves stress and promotes healing in the upper parts of the body.

Now traditional Thai foot massage and head-neck-shoulder massage are available in san miguel through Spa Thai. The staff has been trained by Dr. Mike Herbert, a naturopathic doctor and long-time San Miguel resident, who went to Thailand to study this ancient healing practice.
