Concert in San Miguel Viejo for Ojalá Niños
By Elsmarie Norby
“This was one of my most delightful afternoons ever in San Miguel!” “Today has been the highlight of our trip to San Miguel!” These are typical comments by residents and visitors after attending a Concierto en el Campo in front of the historic church in the rural community of San Miguel Viejo.
The concert stars David Garza, also known as Lynx Bigtooth Maple, singer/guitarist extraordinaire. David has been singing since his teens (professionally since the ‘90s) and has been a musical favorite in San Miguel for the last 12 years. “I play and sing my versions of the Beatles, Willie Nelson, Buddy Holly, Marvin Gaye, to name a few, as well as my own songs. My guitar playing style takes a little bit from different genres of world music and blends it with good rhythm and poetic lyrics.”
Conciertos en el Campo are free of charge, a gift to the local community and to the greater San Miguel, bringing us together and fostering recognition and acceptance of our diversity. Visitors are asked to give a donation of any amount to the local afterschool education program, Ojalá Niños. This program serves over 100 indigenous children with classes in arts, music, literacy, health, and environment every weekday, plus field trips and special workshops, all free of charge to the families. The word ojalá originates in ancient Arabic, meaning “God willing/hope.”
Come and enjoy great music in a beautiful country setting in front of a church dating back to 1542. Meet the Ojalá children and see some of their artwork, as well as the art of local campesinos of fine stone and wood sculptures. There will also be a very brief, interesting presentation about the area’s history.
Our concert will be on Sunday, August 31, at 3pm. A free bus takes you round-trip to San Miguel Viejo, leaving calle Cardo, across from St. Paul’s Church, at 2:15pm. It’s a trip to the country, so dress casually and comfortably. A reception follows the concert, so the bus will go back to calle Cardo around 5pm. For driving, taxi, and walking directions see the Ojalá Niños website: www.ojala-ninos.org and come celebrate with us!
