Black is the New Black

By Joan DiPiero

Every new fashion cycle predicts the demise of black, offering seasonal substitutes to counteract black’s hold as the most popular basic color. One year the color taupe is touted as the next black, followed the next season by predictions that brown will be the newest winner. Despite these edicts, we in the Cat World, know that there is not and never will be any substitute for our Basic Black Cats. Not willing to be part of a trendy, fickle marketing ploy, our black cats know their value and will never willingly trade their midnight coats for taupe or brown. What other coat color could so dramatically and perfectly contrast their eyesbe they green, gray, or amber? What other color could illustrate the healthy lustrous sheen of their fur? What other color could possibly go from day to evening with so little fuss?

If you are not yet a believer, how about the recent study that black cats are more intelligent, more playful, more affectionate, and far superior to other colored cats? (For the sake of full disclosure, that particular study was done by a select sample group comprised of all six black cat residents of the SPA who felt that the other cats need not participate, being somewhat inferior.)

Now meet our wonderful sample group, all between the delightful ages of five to six months old. Echo is our most vocal girl, insisting that you pay close attention to her needs, which include petting and playing. Edgar, her brother, is a sweetheart, much quieter than his sister, not demanding attention, just silently showing up on our laps, just as effective an approach. Gia is our boing-boing girl, extrovert and acrobat extraordinaire, leaping as though auditioning for Cirque du Soleil. Gustavo, her brother, a long-haired handsome boy, is a more tranquil type, but the first to snuggle up. Licorice, also with Rapunzel-like locks of hair, is a snuggler, friendly and outgoing. Linus, his little brother, has distinguishing white strands of fur throughout his equally long black fur, giving him a debonair appearance along with his charming personality.

Excited by the results of the study, these six are eager to meet you (Los Pinos 7, 152-6124, Monday-Saturday, 11-2) and demonstrate why they will always remain in fashion. Perhaps when one of them is in your home, you will enhance their stylish looks with a simple strand of pearls, also timeless.
