Alice Denham’s Secrets Embraced by Carlos Vital

By Alice Denham

The painter Carlos Vital was so shocked by my Secrets of San Miguel, 1968-2008 that he just had to cover those wild times with his gorgeous painting. His brilliant village with taxis, folks, casas, balloons and jacarandas enchanted my publishers and became my book cover.

To honor and thank him, I am presenting an exhibition of Carlos’ latest paintings at Barbara Poole’s Galería Bordello. Come see Carlos Vital’s exciting new work and enjoy vinos y botanas. Carlos was the hottest seller at Galería San Miguel until Sylvia closed it. Carlos sells in the desirable US$100-200 range, which Barbara Poole prefers as she feels street artists reveal the true soul of Mexico.

Once, Carlos painted 40 small paintings for a wedding. He painted 30 nudes in a garden, and the figures were so tiny they looked like flowers. The late famous poet W.D. Snodgrass and his widow, Kathleen, purchased four.

To honor this event, I am selling Secrets of San Miguel and Sleeping with Bad Boys: Literary New York in the 1950s and 1960s for 100 pesos each. Normally they cost 200 pesos each. I will read at 6:30 and 7:30pm for five minutes each time. Besides New York City in 2014, I gave readings/signings in Nashville, TN; Chapel Hill, NC; Edgefield, SC;, and Tallahassee, FL.

To quote my enthusiastic publisher, “Secrets of San Miguel is about hippies forcibly shorn of their manes, womanizing drug dealers, police torture, gorgeous bullfighters, martyred laborers, good-hearted murderers, black-hearted saints, international sex and romance, both gay and straight, with heroism, family love, and abiding friendship in the mix.” Madeira Press, Chapel Hill.

About Sleeping with Bad Boys, Stacy D’Erasmo wrote in The New York Times: “Wry, gossipy, apparently possessed of an extraordinary memory and nobody’s fool….”

Carlos Vital, Torreon accountant, found his soul as a painter in San Miguel.

I have come to this artists’ colony to write since hippie days. I am also the author of Amo: the Feminist Centerfold from Outer Space, My Darling from the Lions, and many short stories and articles and the only Playmate to have a short story published in the same issue of Playboy. My story was later made into a festival prizewinning movie. I am also a founding member of the National Organization for Women (NOW).

Carlos Vital and I invite you to celebrate! Back in the ’50s, my first Mexican novio built the Bordello as his first project after UNAM, a commission he ever after denied. It was famous for good steak. Now Barbara has made it into a stylish gallery and B & B. Come see!
