A Day Enjoying San Miguel Flora and Fauna

By Sandra Ríos

One of the most visited places in San Miguel de Allende is undoubtedly El Charco del Ingenio where you can get a close up and personal experience of its contribution to the conservation of endemic plants of the region and animal care. If you want to start your day with a hearty breakfast, Cafe del Charco is the right place. This restaurant is known for preparing fresh and healthy dishes. We recommend toast with orange marmalade and molletes or chilaquiles accompanied by organic coffee. After finishing your breakfast, you can enjoy the beautiful landscape of the natural reservoir and its botanical collection and watch all kinds of birds and butterflies. You can also visit La Cañada, a natural monument formed by rocks, caves, pools, and cliffs, which is crossed by a creek that is a permanent water source. We recommend the birding tour for private groups. The cost is 60 pesos for adults, 50 pesos for students and teachers, and 40 pesos for children. Every first and third Wednesday of the month from 9 am-11:30 am, there is a tour in English costing 100 pesos. The guided visit to El Charco is on Tuesday and Thursday at 10am; it costs 80 pesos. Reservations should be made in advance. The tour lasts about two hours.

At the end, you can return to the café and taste some delicious enmoladas with a green salad accompanied by a mojito. At checkout, you can visit the store for organic products and health items, clothing, regional crafts, books, art objects, and other items.
