First Annual Harvest Festival at Bodega Dos Buhos

What do the surrounding rolling hills of San Miguel have in common with those of Italy and France? Well, a lot more these days, with the nascent vineyards and wineries sprouting up in the countryside. If you haven’t noticed the growing winemaking industry in the region, it is time to take notice. One of the best-kept secrets of the local wine movement is a hidden gem known as Bodega Dos Buhos (six kilometers outside town on the road to Querétaro), which will celebrate its first annual vendimia (harvest) festival by opening its beautiful, rustic facilities for a rare public celebration.

Planted in 2006, the Bodega Dos Buhos vineyard was started with eight varietals—Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tempranillo, Granache, Aliagnico, and Moscato Giallo—on family land that was once a peach orchard. With a philosophy of allowing the natural yeast and terroir (combination of soil, climate and sunlight) to come through and define the taste of the wines, the vines are grown organically in the privileged climate of the semi-arid countryside which prevents mold and fungus growths. A small batch production of 4,000 bottles is the usual production size to maintain quality and to keep production costs as low as possible to avoid having to use industrial agricultural methods. The vineyard has grown as organically as the wine. Finally, the public debut is ready with the addition of a barrel room, production room, event space, olive orchard and art gallery.

The two wine stars this year, created by winemaker Diane Maycotte, are her Moscato Giallo semi-sec and a triple blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Granache Roble, which will be presented in a limited edition (200 numbered bottles with special edition labels by Peter Leventhal). The public will also be delighted with Cuban music performances by Gil Gutiérrez and Gabriel Hernández (a Cuban pianist who used to play in the Buena Vista Social Club) as well as accordion music by Camile García. Other attractions are an art exhibition by Peter Leventhal and Terra Mizwa and an auction to benefit five local charities, including the Red Cross, Feed the Hungry, Jóvenes Adelante, Audubon and the Community Church of San Miguel/CASA to raise funds for breast cancer research. Auction items include a beautiful vintage Louis Vuitton trunk and two bronze sculptures. Guests will be delighted by exquisite canapés by celebrated Rosewood chef, Victor Palmas; an olive oil tasting; and a delectable cheese tasting by master cheese connoisseur Mariana Peraza from Luna de Queso.
