Turkkan Osman Macías and Isir Almaguer concert

By Ernest H. Newman

Isir Almaguer, pianista

When the first raindrops fell someone perhaps thought of music. Calm and violent, sweet and tender, beautiful beyond measure and ugly like our crude reality. So much in common between music and rain, one reflecting the other in so many ways and both necessary to live on different levels. With this in mind violinist Turkkan Osman Macías and Cuban pianist Isir Almaguer named their ensemble “Duo Chaak” in reference to Chaak, the Mayan God of the Rain.

Water is life and when astronomers look into the heavens in search of exoplanets that could harbor potential life forms, the key element is water. On earth we are blessed with it, allowing it to flourish, civilizations to evolve and minds to create and imagine. All these are “Fruits of the Earth,” the title chosen by Mr. Osman for his upcoming performance in San Miguel de Allende on July 25 at 5:30pm in St. Paul’s Church.

This upcoming performance will feature an interesting variety of works such as Chaconne in G minor by Vitali, Sonata in E minor by Elgar, Three Pieces by Revueltas, A Mis Amigos by Armengol and finally Rumanian Dances by Bartok. All these works are very different from each other in style and time period, but share one thing in common; their creation was inspired by an element of folklore pertaining to each composer and their region.

Violinist Turkkan Osman was born and raised in San Miguel de Allende. At age 15 he moved to Mexico City to study at Escuela de Musica Vida y Movimiento. Last year he earned his Bachelor of Music from the Manhattahn School of Music and is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree at Manhattan School of Music with Professor Patinka Kopec.

Playing with Osman will be pianist Isir Almaguer. She graduated from the Instituto Superior de Artes de La Habana, in 1987. She worked with the main opera companies in Cuba such as the Lyrical Theatre Rodrigo Prats and the National Opera of Cuba. Currently she teaches at the Music School of the University of Guanajuato.

Mr. Osman and Isir Almaguer are very excited to perform this program as a way of thanking the San Miguel community for their continued support. Both musicians have also been invited to perform on October 20 in Guanajuato as part of the Festival Internacional Cervantino 2014 to which they are looking forward.

You are cordially invited by these wonderful musicians to an afternoon of music. Tickets will be sold at the door. Donation 150 pesos.

Donations for Turkkan’s fall tuition can be made to the San Miguel Community Foundation with the notation ¨Pro Musica-Turkkan” on the memo line if US tax deductibility is desired.
