Danzón: “God bless the child……”

By Leonardo Rosen

I’m borrowing the title of a Billie Holiday song, “God Bless the Child that’s Got his Own”. It is my privilege to present two beautiful children who have definitely got their own in the danzón. They are Ana Sofía Arteaga Muñoz, nine years old, and Joan Yaír Casiano Moreno, ten years old. They are students of my colleague, Omar Llamas, in the danzón group of CEDECOM, a community center in San Miguel de Allende. Omar taught them my choreography to a danzón entitled “El Violín Encantado” (“The Enchanted Violin”). Yaír and Sofy recognized this for what it is, a fairy tale, and learned to dance it much faster than most adults would. This very young dance couple joined the Club de Danzón “Mercerina” to perform this with great success at the Muestra Nacional del Danzón de San Luis Potosí on June 21. Being very talented, they stole the show! Since then, they have performed this piece in various local events. Speaking personally, I love these kids very much.

Of course, the Mercerina grownups were also wonderful in San Luis Potosí, and I love them very much, too. Muchas gracias to Dr. Claudia Llanas, Rosío Vargas, Omar Llamas, Merle Howard and Martín Patlán for their performances. I am blessed to have such fine compañeros.

Thanks to our beautiful public, El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables con el Club de Danzón Mercerina have made a very successful comeback to the Jardín Principal of San Miguel. Our next event takes place on Sunday, July 20, 6-9pm. Of course, admission is free. Please call 152-6385 (Educación y Cultura) or 154-5840 (Leonardo Rosen). You are the stars of this show.

¡Cuando repica el timbal, bailamos!
