Alejandra Mendoza: A Rain of Selfies

By Margaret Failoni

Once again, this very hip and psychedelic artist delights us with her irreverent take on what’s happening all around us. Using the poorest of materials, and true to her “of the moment” street art intuition, Alejandra Mendoza updates us on the fun and playful mania of the present day communication system, not only between her peers, but what appears to be a worldwide contamination. A day doesn’t go by that we don’t see everyday Joes as well as world dignitaries using their hand-held phone/cameras to produce the ever iconic selfie.

Alejandra Mendoza: A Rain of Selfies
Sat, Jul 5, 5-8pm
Galería Santiago Corral
Fábrica La Aurora

From her original puppet-like people to these images of self-obsession,

Mendoza delights us with her not-so-always gentle analysis of present day society, but thanks to the ever-present humor, it all becomes palatable.

“LOL” (laughing out loud) is an installation of many laughing faces in a ring-around-the-circle attitude. On another wall, we see “Portraits of a Self-Obsession,” a shower of different peoples, all doing their selfies. Both installation pieces are created with spray paint and acrylics on paper with machine stitching accenting the different parts of the body. For the selfies, friends and colleagues participated in the work creating these self-portraits, which the artist reinterpreted onto paper.

This show is but a preview of Mendoza’s work which will be exhibited in the

Border Crossings: Mexico/USA exhibition in Chicago next September on the floor of the EXPO CHGO International Art Fair which is presented by the

National Museum of Mexican Art and curated by Margaret Failoni and Sergio

Gomez. Mendoza has also been chosen to exhibit in an important group show of contemporary Mexican Art next November in the prestigious Chicago Art

The more we see of her work, the more we realize why international magazines have signaled her out as one of the most promising amongst the emerging artists in Mexico today.
