Danzón: we’re back with sweet passion!
By Leonardo Rosen
Our events in the Jardín, “El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables con el Club de Danzón Mercerina” have been effectively suspended since a last moment cancellation by the authorities this past March 9. We never received a proper explanation for this. Maybe there isn’t any. I was ready to stop making the rounds of government offices and just give up. However, on Friday, June 13, I decided to bang my head against the wall one last time. Friday the 13th turned out to be my lucky day!
El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables con el Club de Danzón Mercerina
Sun, Jun 29, 6-9pm
Thus, I’m able to announce, not without some trepidation, that we are presenting our event in the Jardín Principal of San Miguel de Allende on Sunday, June 29, with one show, 6-9pm. These hours should avoid any conflict and the worst of the heat. Of course, admission is free. For reliable information, please call 152-6385 (Educación y Cultura) or 154-5840 (Leonardo Rosen). You can dance to the best-recorded Latin music or just watch. To all of our dear regular participants… We have never needed your support and your physical presence more than now. Sometimes I find it difficult to believe that after nearly six years of these popular and well-attended events, it has continued to be such a struggle. After all, I do this as an unpaid volunteer.
I thank José Luis Chagoyan, Síndico Municipal (i.e. Deputy Mayor) and Acasio Martínez, Director de Educación y Cultura, for taking some action. I also thank María José Garrido, Directora de Turismo y Fomento Económico for expressing her intention to help. Above all, I thank you, our wonderful public, for asking me every day when the next event will be.
When you read this, the Club de Danzón “Mercerina” will have performed on June 21 at the Muestra Nacional del Danzón de San Luis Potosí, as official representative of the City of San Miguel de Allende. With sweet passion, let’s celebrate the Joy of Life through our dance!
