Siempre Swing will be “talkin’ ‘bout our generation” as the popular 12-piece swing band of Mexican and gringo musicians and singers plays “Let’s Go to the Hop” and other favorites of the ‘50s and ‘60s in English and Spanish for all ages.

The musical memory lane will include tunes from the era of Elvis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry such as “Straighten Up and Fly Right,” “Great Balls o’ Fire” and “Jailhouse Rock” for dances such as the twist, the jitterbug and the hand jive! So get ready to bump, grind and slide!

“This is our way to unite the cultures,” said Miguel Olvera, founder of the Spanish School, also known as Liceo de la Lengua, where he blends the cultures through Spanish and English lessons daily at Pueblito 5 in Centro. His co-producer, Erssel Snyder of Galeria Cinco at the same location, is putting up a 500-peso prize for the best dance duo at the hop.

The event, a benefit for local orphanage Casa Ayuda, will be Friday, June 20, from 7:30 to 11pm at the Sindicato at Recreo 4 in Centro. Look for the vintage car outside. Admission will be only 100 pesos (available at La Biblioteca in advance), and you won’t have to look for a drive-in when you are through and hungry, for there will be food and beverages, including the signature Cokes and cervezas from the ‘50s and ‘60s on premises.

“Dance couples can be mixed or same sex, and singles are encouraged to come, grab a partner and participate,” said Snyder, who foresees monthly events of this type at Salon Los Pinos with prizes for best get-up and more. He and Olvera are explaining to Mexicans that sock hops originated because school gyms in the US had wood floors that would have been scuffed by shoes at these teen dances.

There will be performances by the children of Casa Ayuda and the Arthur Murray Dancers, who will also judge the dance contest, and there will be special guest appearances at this emceed event. So, slide on down the dance floor and join us! Capacity is only 120 this month! For more information, call 044-415-121-2535.

Well, you can rock it you can roll it

You can stop and you can stroll it at the hop

When the record starts spinnin’

You calypso when you chicken at the hop

Do the dance sensation that is sweepin’ the nation at the hop

Ah, let’s go to the hop

Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)

Let’s go to the hop, (oh baby)

Let’s go to the hop

Come on, let’s go to the hop
