Aaron Diaz chips in at charity golf tournament

By Amy Kuether

Produced by San Miguel Angels for Education (SMAFE), Ventanas de Oportunidad Charity Golf Tournament brought in enough funds in 2013 to provide scholarships for 11 girls from Casa Hogar Santa Julia to receive private, bilingual education and tutoring at Colegio Atabal and Academia Internacional for a full academic year. The second annual tournament with special celebrity guest Aaron Diaz will take place at Ventanas de San Miguel, Golf & Resort on July 5, 2014.

In 2003, Nobel Peace Laureate Nelson Mandela said: “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.” However, for some populations, education is not easy to come by, if it is even an option at all.  Mexican orphans, for example, lack family support and encouragement and often the access not only to education, but to quality education. These children, raised in a diverse and vibrant country, an emerging leader in Latin America, often fall through the cracks, lagging behind while Mexican children from families whose fortunes lead the country’s development surge ahead.

SMAFE supports and invests in the education of children in orphanages and provides access to private primary, secondary and higher education. But SMAFE goes beyond access. It delivers the tools for student success through technology, bilingual education, tutoring and relationships with mentors.  This process provides not only crucial academic preparation, but also instills critical self-esteem to empower tomorrow’s leaders. This is necessary because although Mexico is developing not everyone benefits equally from development.

Golfers and guests can participate in this annual fundraiser to help open windows of opportunity to a better education for children in local orphanages. Exciting hole-in-one prizes, including cars, sponsored by BanBajio and Chrysler San Miguel, a lot and a club membership at Ventanas and a motorcycle from Harley-Davidson, are all up for grabs. Up to 120 golfers can participate and an additional 180 guests attend the award ceremony luncheon. Golfers’ registration fees are 2,500 pesos for women and 3,000 pesos for men.  Tickets are available for the award ceremony luncheon that includes an incredible catered menu and all beverages for 750 pesos. For more information, please visit www.ventanasdeoportunidad .org.
