“Mystical Naturalism: Contemplations on a Cosmic God”

By Jon Sievert

So much of our religious heritage ties God to Earth, to human stories and chosen peoples. As we begin to find planets around other stars, and turn over long-held beliefs, life in the universe beyond is becoming more of an accepted idea. In the last few decades, a new theory says the universe may have begun in the dark rather than the light. How does a concept of God, or no-god, fit with our evolving scientific revelations? At this week’s Unitarian Universalist Fellowship service, the Reverend Susan Manker-Seale discusses “Mystical Naturalism: Contemplations on a Cosmic God.”

Rev. Manker-Seale has been a UU minister for 28 years. She served congregations in San Rafael, California; Glendale, Tucson; and Flagstaff, Arizona, from which she recently retired and moved to Phoenix to devote time to family and her writing. Last fall she published her novel, Mysteries of the Esse: Shalas Hope. She and her husband, Curtiss, are not strangers to San Miguel de Allende; they came here in the summer of 1981 to attend the Academia Hispano Americana to hone their Spanish so Susan could teach children in their native tongue in Tucson. Susan served her UU association in many ways, but most recently as a lead mentor and coach for her colleagues. She also serves on the board of UU Mystics in Community. Susan and Curtiss are visiting San Miguel to vacation with their daughters, grandson, and extended family.

Unitarian Universalists value the individual spiritual journey and practice a faith of deeds, not creeds. Our presentations emphasize the values of community, spirituality and social justice. The UU Fellowship meets every Sunday at 10:30am at La Posada de la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15 and welcomes people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientation and gender identity. Visitors are invited to attend the service and then join the UUs in the hotel restaurant for brunch.
