San Miguel de Allende, the heart of Mexico
By Sandra Ríos
Being in the center of the country, San Miguel de Allende has acquired the name “The Heart of Mexico,” and to acknowledge this let’s begin our day with a rich breakfast surrounded by beautiful foliage and a warm atmosphere at the restaurant at Posada Corazón. Most of the ingredients they use to prepare breakfasts come from their own organic garden. Posada Corazon is located at Aldama 9 in Centro.
After a delicious breakfast we recommend you visit the San Miguel orchid conservatory, where you will find a large collection of orchids that was started in the 1940s. It is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9am to 4pm and located on calle Santo Domingo across from Los Pocitos.
To explore a part of the past we suggest a trip to la Cañada de la Virgen, where you can visit the archaeological site and appreciate Mesoamerican architecture. Its axis of symmetry is directed toward the rising and setting of the sun and moon. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm. Located 30 kilometers from San Miguel de Allende on the road to Guanajuato. Information is available at the tourism center located at Plaza Principal 8, Centro (tel. 154-7175).
Now, to relax and have a bite to eat and a drink, a good option is La Mezcalería, a mezcal bar with internationally inspired tapas to accompany your beverage. Their wide assortment of mezcals come from Oaxaca, and they also have their own brand. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 5pm to 11pm. La Mezcalería is at Correo 47, Centro.
