Ventanas de Oportunidad: Windows to a brighter future
By Antonio De Jesús Aguado
One of the most endearing and respectable qualities of Mexican culture, according to Naomi Lawler, director of San Miguel Angels For Education (SMA-FE), is their focus on and commitment to family. “In so many cases, I’ve seen parents’ incredible personal sacrifices so their children can receive a better education and have a more promising future. Our charity is focused on picking up where some very unfortunate circumstances have left children without hope for a brighter future,” said Ms. Lawler.
SMA-FE supports and invests in the education of children in orphanages to shape a more vibrant future for one of Mexico’s most vital resources—its children. SMA-FE provides access to primary, secondary and higher education while delivering the tools for success through technology, bilingual education, tutoring and relationships with mentors for those who lack these critical influences in their everyday lives, which ultimately empowers tomorrow’s leaders.
According to Lawler, the key ingredients for breaking the cycle of ignorance, poverty, abuse, violence and neglect that ruin families and orphan innocent children are love and education. “The greatest needs our children have are love and knowledge. If these kids cannot have their needs met through their biological families, the San Miguel community has as big a heart as any community I’ve ever been a part of. I’ve watched the collective community embrace these kids for years, and I believe that it does take a village to raise children well.”
In order to help SMA-FE, you can take part in Ventanas de Oportunidad’s second annual charity golf tournament, which will take place on July 5, at Ventanas de San Miguel. All proceeds from this tournament will go toward providing private, bilingual education for children in local orphanages.
