Geometrias Urbanas y Sagradas
By Ivonne Kennedy
Ivonne Kennedy was born in the city of Oaxaca in 1971, where she continues to reside. A painter of classic and architectonic reminiscences in an environment that awards the picturesque folkloric and a supposed mythic-magical vision, her resistance to take on the forms of the inexistent but well-publicized “Oaxacan school of painting” singularizes her as much as the urban iconography which she utilizes in her paintings.

Writer Fernando Solana has written about her work… “Ivonne Kennedy’s austere paintings harbor certain active echoes, which, as in all art, respond to a system of interartistic influences. Her structures bring to mind Piranesi’s simultaneous spaces, and Escher’s two-way staircases. But her colors are truly her tribute, earned in her very own territory; they are hers, as are her certain type of cubism and the inherited, archaic geometry of Greek keys, with their straight lines and the apex of tradition.
Gridded Oaxaca, the fish in the net. All painting is a reconstruction of the world. Furthermore, it should be an epiphany, a re-encounter with the objective vision of things, that state of being outside or beyond one self that makes art happen. Ivonne Kennedy is a painter in a painter’s land. She touches the San Felipe mountain range, the Cathedral’s dome, and the skylights of Santo Domingo. Her eyes make contact, they feel and react. And then, every thing is splendorous, full of lines and depths.”
Since 1988, Ivonne Kennedy has participated in group shows in Mexico, the United States, Cuba, Holland, Sweden, Germany and Asia. Her solo exhibitions are Tierra de Arcanos (Galería HB, Mexico City, 1998), Tiempos y Ausencias (Casa de la Cultura de Oaxaca, 2001), La transparencia del Silencio (Galería “Arte de Oaxaca”, 2001), Construcción de Sueños y Deseos, (Haus Samson Gallery, Clarholz, Germany, 2004) Destinos Elegidos (Rosewood Resort, S.M.A. Gjto. 2012), Habitar los Silencios (Noel Cayetano Contemporary Art Gallery, Oaxaca, Mex. 2012) and El Espejo de las Causas del Todo (Senado de la República, México, D.F., 2014)
