Ministerio Público’s mobile unit responds to robberies
By Antonio De Jesús Aguado
The district attorney in San Miguel de Allende, René Urrutia, commented that the Ministerio Público (MP) has made several changes to improve services for victims of residential or commercial robberies. A new primary response office will receive calls, gather information, and dispatch personnel in a mobile unit to the crime scene. Bilingual support for those who do not speak Spanish has also been augmented.
The mobile unit is an exclusive initiative of Guanajuato. It is a way of saving time for victims, who in the past had to go to the central offices of the Subprocuraduría, located on Boulevard de la Conspiración, and wait up to six hours to file their criminal complaint.
If a robbery occurs at a business or residence victims can call 01-800-368-6242 (01-800-DNUNCIA) and the mobile unit will be sent to the crime scene. Victims will not have to go to the MP but instead can file their criminal complaints with the agents who arrive. If there are witnesses they can also give their declarations, and the criminal complaint will be printed and a copy handed over to the victim. The mobile unit also contains a small, well-equipped laboratory to help them conduct their investigation. Urrutia said that in the past robbery victims had to go to the MP to file their complaint, and later the MP had to go to the scene to verify the facts, followed by agents who would gather evidence, but now all those services are included with the mobile MP.
If sanmiguelenses are victims of these crimes, when they call the MP for help they must provide sufficient information. If they only speak English, the call will be immediately transferred to the bilingual agency.
