End Polio Now!

By Robin Loving Rowland

Almost all expats in San Miguel are old enough to remember the polio scare of the 1950s. As children, we dutifully rendered our arms to receive the polio vaccine. Now, we know a few folks who were afflicted, but polio is almost a thing of the past – or is it?

“We are this close” to eradicating polio, according to the largest ad campaign in the world, one launched by Rotary, which joins the World Health Organization in noting that polio is 99% gone from the planet. But, despite Rotary’s work with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and others, polio is on the rise again, and none of us want to see the debilitating results.

Tony Ronci, president-elect of the Rotary Club of San Miguel de Allende – Midday, will share how we can help eradicate polio in our time at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Sunday, June 1, at 10:30am at Hotel Posada la Aldea, Ancha de San Antonio 15.

Ronci is a retired attorney. His term as president will begin July 1. It will be his third Rotary presidency.

Rotary professionally, intelligently and inspirationally unites diversely competent leaders to ethically and responsibly lead people to generate sustainable solutions to the world’s most acute humanitarian challenges through the strong connections of friendship, tolerance, and peaceful service.
