Better bilingual service at the DA’s office

By Antonio De Jesús Aguado

The bilingual agency in the district attorney’s office, which offers attention in English for those who can only speak English, has made personnel changes in order to improve service and be open 24 hours a day.

In 2011, by initiative of State General Attorney Carlos Zamarripa Aguirre, a bilingual agency was opened in the Ministerio Público of San Miguel de Allende because of the high number of English-speaking people wanting to file criminal complaints. This agency was also opened because the Ministerio Público has a responsibility to provide an interpreter for those who do not speak Spanish. According to Urrutia, before 2011 victims of a crime who did not speak Spanish had to bring their own interpreters or the Ministerio Público had to find one and the process took more time.

The service in English was previously provided by attorney Adriana Ramírez, who beginning May 2 is now in charge of an area for specialized attention to women. The new head of the agency is José Ezequiel Hernández, who speaks English fluently and will provide, along with his secretary, better attention, said René Urrutia, the District Attorney.

Urrutia highlighted that the service will be offered 24/7 and made it clear that all those who do not speak Spanish have the right to an interpreter. He also mentioned that all the documents are written in the victims’ language so they can sign something that they understand. The bilingual agency receives an average of one criminal complaint every four days. Urrutia noted that reports of home robberies have been decreasing in the last few weeks, although he did not mention numbers.

Also to improve service the facilities of theMinisterio Público were expanded and were inaugurated on Friday, May 2, by Guanajuato governor Miguel Márquez and State General Attorney Carlos Zamarripa Aguirre. The new facilities include Módulos de Atención Primaria (offices where crime victims receive attention and orientation before being channeled to the correct area). The new offices include specialized areas for the investigation of homicides as well as for the robberies of houses, businesses and stores. These offices, said the governor, are a new model in the state and are also being set up in 10 other states
