Rare travel poster exhibit

By Martin Rosenberg

In the world of unique fine art, authentic vintage travel posters are catching up with the value and demand of collectible film posters. Early lithographic travel posters being exhibited at Vintage Posters International on Zacateros 57 rarely survived being plastered on city street walls or kiosks. It was the collector wanting a special artist, region or mode of transportation who wisely got a poster from a printer before it became public art. Paper and inks were expensive, so vintage travel posters from communist regimes of Europe, such as Poland, are especially rare. These art posters by famous painters weren’t made for sale. Rarely seen museum quality travel posters from the 1920s in the exhibit are from The Rosenberg Collection.

What should a person consider in buying an original poster? “First, love the image,” advises founding director of the International Vintage Poster Dealers Association, Martin Rosenberg, a resident of San Miguel. “A great poster has a magnetic impact and can draw you into its magic immediately. When that happens you can be sure it will bring joy into your daily life.”

Subject or topic being advertised is also a consideration, such as travel, movies, music, theater or dance. The ideal poster’s condition should retain vibrant color and have little or no restoration. Original posters become scarcer over time. When designed by a recognized artist their market value may increase many times the initial cost.

“This is our first travel poster exhibition. It is fitting to select works for the number one world’s best destination that have not been shown in the Americas. We’ve chosen unique examples to please the eye, emotion and cerebral viewer. Art lovers and collectors alike will enjoy the posters on display.”

The opening reception is on Saturday, May 17, 4 to 7pm at the Vintage Poster Gallery, Zacateros 57. For more information on the collection visit www.rosenbergcollection.com.
