It’s kitten time!
By Joan DiPiero
Spring is here at last and, at the SPA cattery, the occasion is celebrated by the welcoming of our annual crop of kittens. So far we have entries of almost every color in the spectrum, varying degrees of furriness, sizes from mini to maxi, and personalities ranging from demure to exuberant.
Despite their differences, they all share the same zest for life, playing until they exhaust themselves, then collapsing into a massive kitten pile and instantly falling asleep.
It’s impossible to remain in a bad mood after watching their antics, missteps, bold moves and acrobatics. They are experiencing this new world and gaining confidence each day. They climb to the top of their iron grate wall without thinking about how they will get down. At first vocally demanding to be rescued within days they’ve found the solution.
They climb into the large basket, remain stuck, peering up helplessly until they discover that wicker makes a great ladder, enabling them to go in and out at will. They chase each other until they bump into walls. While some will note the boundaries, others pay no attention to the collision, the bump well worth the fun. And just when we think they have unending energy, they start to slow down and we are treated to another reward. These formerly squirming babies, two and three at a time, nestle into our shoulders and laps, snuggling, purring and obviously having very sweet dreams.
If you’re having a bad day, come and visit Olivia, Valentina, Valeria, Valentino and all our adorable kittens. We guarantee your mood will brighten. Volunteer and adoption hours are Monday-Saturday, 11-2, Los Pinos 7, 152-6124. See our website (www.spasanmiguel.org) for pictures and bios of all adoptable animals. There’s nothing like kitten therapy —free with no side effects, except the urge to take some home with you—at least we hope so.
