100 Women Who Care meets April 21 at Rosewood
By Kathleen Devine and Susan Page
100 Women Who Care will hold its next meeting on April 21 at the Rosewood Hotel. This remarkable, relatively new organization has already raised more than 100,000 pesos for San Miguel nonprofit organizations that help underserved communities around San Miguel. We have helped to fund scholarships for high school students, free day care for the children of working mothers, purified water for rural communities previously drinking contaminated water, and support for our local orphanage. And we are just getting started!

Does our work require a large Board of Directors, an expensive staff, costly administrative expenses? None of that! Raising this money could not be simpler. Here is how it works: We meet four times a year for one hour each time. At each meeting, several nonprofit organizations are nominated. Three are drawn out of a hat. We hear a short presentation on each of the three, and then we vote. Each woman (or team of women) has pledged to donate 1,000 pesos to the winning organization. When we achieve our goal of 100 women, we will raise 100,000 pesos for one of San Miguel’s hard-working nonprofits, offering this to a different nonprofit four times each year.
To join this heartwarming group of women, all you have to do is show up at a meeting, sign a pledge agreement, and then attend every meeting if you are in town. If you cannot attend a meeting, you must leave your donation before the meeting at any La Conexion location addressed to Susan Page, Box 549.
You may join as an individual, pledging 1,000 pesos four times a year. Or, you may join as a team of two people who together pledge this amount. When it comes to voting for the winning nonprofit each time, there is one vote per 1,000-peso donation, so each team must first agree and then cast only one vote.
FAI (Fundación de Apoyo Infantil) was selected in January
At its meeting in January, 100 Women Who Care awarded their pooled donations to FAI!
Immediately after the announcement that Fundación de Apoyo Infantil had been selected, FAI’s Executive Director, Alexa Fullerton, leaped from her seat and clapped with joy! We look forward to hearing from Alexa at the April 21 meeting about how these funds were spent.
Other award recipients have been Mujeres en Cambio, Casa de Los Ángeles, CATIS, and Casa Hogar Santa Julia.
Any member may nominate a charity to be placed in the hat for possible selection to receive funding. Nomination forms, plus full information about the organization, are available on line at www.100womenwhocaresma.com. We invite all women who care to attend the meeting on April 21 at the Rosewood Hotel. We are grateful to the Rosewood for their admirable community spirit in donating the space for our meeting. You are invited to arrive at 3:30pm for no-host cocktails and a chance to mix and mingle. Joining (for new members) and signing in with your donation begins at 4:30pm. The meeting will begin promptly at 5pm and will end by 6pm.
