The perfect stay-at-home, low-maintenance dogs
By Megan Gabel
What do Shy, Rita, Macy, Nellie, and Dorita have in common? They each would much rather stay in your house with you than venture out into that big bad world of loud noises, cars and strangers. Now, don’t get me wrong – they will go out for a walk if you insist. But the truth, as stated so eloquently by the Beatles, is, all they need is love! Give them food, shelter and a warm touch and they will each be a happy, loyal companion.
Shy, now affectionately known as “Shy-Bear,” is a black, fluffy, medium-large bundle of adorableness. About five years old, she wiggles when she scurries to you for some petting, but she’d rather not face zooming cars and motorcycles – or strangers, for that matter. She bolts back to safety instead. She’ll keep your body warm at night and warm your heart during the day.
Macy is a pistol! A small, beautiful girl with fine, delicate features, she has blossomed into a playful, affectionate cutie-pie. She has a marvelous sense of humor, teasing her playmates (she would do best in a home with a dog friend), taunting them to run with her as she races like the wind in the dog exercise area. Leery of strangers, Macy will surprise you with cuddling when you get to know her.
Rita, about three years old, can be downright antagonistic to strangers who try to coax her out for a walk. But to those she knows and loves, her kisses abound. A small/medium sweetheart in disguise, gain her trust and she’d love to keep you company as you lounge around your garden or in front of TV.
About three and a half years old, medium-sized and smart, Nellie has recently become difficult to coax outside, especially if a car is passing by at the moment we open the door to start a walk. Somewhat independent, she still enjoys attention and will press close to you so you can reach her more easily.
Almost five years old, Dorita, an elegant, medium-large slender female, is nervous with new people, but enjoys being given lots of attention once she is comfortable with you. She is a gentle soul who needs someone who will give her time to bond. The wait will be worth it.
