Music on the rocks

By Antonio De Jesús Aguado

On Saturday, March 22, the sound of rushing water in the canyon at El Charco del Ingenio was overridden by the music of M5 Mexican Brass, which surprised and entertained the audience with pieces of classical music by Handel, Bach and Mozart, the “Adagio for Strings” by Samuel Barber (used for the movie Platoon), and contemporary music specially composed for the group.

For 16 years in a row El Charco del Ingenio has celebrated the spring equinox with an indigenous ceremony and a concert on the rocks within the canyon. This yearly concert is also one of the main fundraisers for the nonprofit organization.

The attendees started arriving at 4pm to enjoy the equinox ceremony and later looked for the best spot in the canyon; some even took a nap before the concert. There were people of all ages, Mexicans as well as foreigners.

After 5pm, the Mexican Brass, who have classical training, appeared on the stage and started playing. The interaction between the members of the band and the audience was evident. Mexican Brass performed on several natural stages created by the rocks, joked with people and even played a song for a woman for her birthday. The musicians converted the concert into a musical theater show and mixed the familiar with the unexpected.

Currently, Mexican Brass has Guanajuato as its home base but has impressed a wide audience of all ages in different countries.
