Opera San Miguel Presents First Gala

By Shari Alexander

With the cheers still echoing from last Saturday’s overwhelmingly successful Concurso San Miguel 2014, Opera San Miguel will present a spectacular evening of opera on Wednesday, March 19, at Teatro Ángela Peralta. The Gala de Ópera will star past winners of the company’s annual contest, including this year’s first place winner, soprano Adriana Valdés.

In a departure from most opera galas, this concert will feature three full acts from three different masterpieces of the operatic repertoire:  Act IV of Verdi’s Rigoletto, Act IV of Bizet’s Carmen, and Act III of Verdi’s Aida. “We didn’t want to present the usual parade of arias and ensembles usually heard in opera galas,” said John Bills, Artistic Director of Opera San Miguel. “We wanted to give our singers the experience of really delving into their characters, and the audience the chance to get involved in the drama for more than three minutes at a time.”

For the first time in many years, Angela Peralta audiences will be hearing a full 65-piece orchestra, along with a 24 member chorus, in addition to eight remarkably talented young soloists. “It is our opinion that the only way to truly appreciate opera is to hear it as it was composed, with full orchestra,” says Bills. “We are very lucky to have the talented orchestra  and chorus of the Conservatorio de Música de Celaya to join us for this concert.”

Bills says that the Gala is fulfilling one of the long-time goals of Opera San Miguel: to provide performing experience for the most talented and promising young singers in Mexico, discovered through Concurso San Miguel. “We are so pleased to be reuniting these past and current winners of our contest in this truly gala night,” he said.  “I hope Sanmiguelenses will turn out in the same kind of numbers as for our Standing-Room-Only Concurso last week.”
