T’ai Chi Chih—a moving meditation

A while ago I wrote that the movements of T’ai Chi are the fourth component of a wellness program—the energy part. The first three are diet, exercise and supplements.

The gentle movements have been described by many as a moving meditation. Justin Stone, creator of T’ai Chi Chih, often said that while doing them, you feel ‘joy in movement.’

Originally, 20 years ago, I did T’ai Chi Chih because the technique helped me eliminate much of my lower back pain. Then, through the years I continued to do them because I enjoyed the feeling of tranquility I felt. I did not realize I was helping my body in many other ways as much of the recent research has unveiled.

A few nights ago, while on the computer, I happened on a very interesting speech by Vishen Lakhiani from Mind Valley entitled Theory of Awesomeness. It was voted audience favorite as one of the best speeches of the event.

Vishen shares the exact steps you can take to obtain the elusive state of perpetual joy and continuous success and growth.

One of the 12 areas in life we need to seek balance in is meditation, and Vishen suggests some benefits of meditation. When you Google ‘benefits of meditation’ you come up with: less anxiety, better focus of attention, more creativity, more empathy and compassion, better memory, and possibly anti-aging. It is also good for relaxation. And deep relaxation changes our bodies on a genetic level after two months.

In an article from Food Matters, it lists the seven health benefits of deep relaxation:

1. Increased immunity

2. Emotional balance

3. Increased fertility

4. Relieves irritable bowel syndrome

5. Lowers blood pressure

6. Anti-inflammatory

In the article, it states that Harvard researchers found that yoga, meditation and repetitive prayer all induced the relaxation effect.
