Carral Espacio at Fabrica La Aurora was originally the working painting studio for artist Mariló Carral following her move to San Miguel de Allende from Mexico City. Over the years she has invited friends and family (the Carral family is a prodigious example of multiple generations of Mexican artists) to exhibit alongside her own colorful paintings. In 2012 Mariló Carral combined efforts at the gallery with Guadalajara painter Beatriz Castañeda. Although they have continued Mariló’s practice to also showcase other artist’s works, this is the first time they are using the entire space in a combination of painting and furniture. “When we first met Marina Fernández de Cordova and saw her gorgeous Marquesa de Mancera furniture in San Miguel de Allende, we thought, wow, how we can create something together. Our sensibilities are so complimentary,” said Carral. “We borrowed a couple of pieces for the gallery and our clients loved it. One French client thought it a “perfect marriage,” and that is when the three of us thought of this fun exhibition concept: maridajes/pairings, as one would pair a wine to an entrée in a great meal.”
As a painter, Mariló Carral is well known in San Miguel de Allende and throughout Mexico for her beautiful handling of flowers, still-life and interior domestic scenes. She has been painting several easel-sized works for this special project. A new large aquatic painting based on her recent investigations of the water world of corals, seashells and fish will also be included. “I am working on several new paintings for San Miguel de Allende and exhibitions outside of Mexico for this year,” Carral added. “To combine these new paintings with the Marquesa de Mancera furniture makes me feel as I am walking into my own home.”
Marina Fernández de Cordova, owner and artistic director for Marquesa de Mancera, started painting furniture in her native Spain in 1996. She moved her design and production business to San Miguel de Allende last year and has her own studio at Sollano #28. “I am thrilled to be part of this innovative project combining design and fine art in home-like vignettes” commented Marina. “This isn’t like a show house or my regular presentations in Paris at Maison & Object. I love the raw floors and factory setting at Carral Espacio. It creates the perfect setting to integrate my painted furniture collections, now being created in Mexico, with the beautiful paintings of Mariló Carral and Beatriz Castañeda.” Several room settings will be presented to compliment the paintings. The result allows for a quiet residential feel to the industrial space.
Beatriz Castañeda follows up her recent Carral Espacio solo show of richly hued floral abstractions with a selection of both flower and cactus imagery. When Castañeda started this new series of paintings, she envisioned moving from flowers to cactus to landscapes and back, greatly stimulated by her long walks in Charco del Ingenio. Castañeda said she was “very happy there will be a bedroom setting surrounded by some of the new paintings. So often these paintings feel dreamlike. I paint for people to live with my works. Sharing my paintings with the elegant Marquesa de Mancera pieces adds to the process.”
I looked at several of the pairings and asked each of these talented women which was their favorite. When I listened to the excitement of these three friends complimenting each other’s vision and success, I was reminded of the Cyndi Lauper song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” And aren’t we lucky the three of them are here in San Miguel de Allende to share that fun with us? Pairings at Carral Espacio opens March 7, 2014.
