An enchanted evening at Pro Musica’s gala fundraiser
By Marjorie Pope and Veronica Byrne
Pro Musica’s Opera Week culminated with a spectacular Gala Fundraiser on February 22, raising many thousands of dollars for their Rhythm, Rhyme and Reason education outreach program, which brings music education to nearly 800 children in five schools in and around San Miguel. The program is directed by San Miguel musician, artist and teacher, Maestro Tim Hazell, who has expanded the program so it is now taught for 44 weeks a year as part of each school’s curriculum.
Hosted by Pro Musica Patrons Joy and John Bitner at their stunning home, this spectacular evening, commenced with Champagne and canapés in the enchanting gardens, followed by 25 children from RR&R’s Los Ricos school performing on numerous instruments specially made for the program, including authentic Pre- Columbian replicas and guitars handmade by a San Miguel luthier, all funded by donors.
A sumptuous, four-course dinner followed in the breathtaking Music Pavilion, in which over 70 guests sat down with the stars of Pro Musica’s highly praised production of Verdi’s opera Il Trovatore. The stars singing a wide variety of songs from opera, musicals and Zarzuela, accompanied on the grand piano by the opera’s Music Director, Mario Alberto Hernández, followed dinner.
After dinner the well-known San Miguel dentist, Dr María Guadalupe Tejeda Gómez, who attended the Gala, pledged to provide free dental care to 100 children in the program, thereby adding an extra benefit to the funds already raised.
Rhythm, Rhyme & Reason still needs financial resources and gifts in kind to continue to reach out to more children.
