Sankofa (go back and get it) in San Miguel

By Marc Taylor

Many of us come to San Miguel after years of love and labor. We have life stories full of the experiences that define us and demonstrate our desire to live with purpose and meaning. We can look back on the accomplishments, the learning, the nurturing helping and mentoring, the money made, goals met, journeys taken, the sensory pleasures, our progeny’s successes and the goodness our generativity provides.

We also look back on the costs. We see the effects of choices forced upon us. The roads taken that lead us toward a safer future but away from authenticity and passion are clearer now. In the quieter moments, we might wonder “what if” and “why not.” What may have been left behind with the thought of deferred self-maintenance that has so faded with time as to be unrecognizable today?

Here in San Miguel we have the chance to reflect on the course of a lifetime and to tally its triumphs and losses. We have the opportunity to integrate our life experiences, identify some personal wisdom and make peace with our many selves.

According to Eric Ericson, the renowned developmental psychologist, this undertaking may be our ultimate life conflict. He describes it as the effort to achieve integration and avoid despair.

The process of this quest is the purpose of Sankofa in San Miguel. We want to make the most of this precious life, honor our experience and listen to the hunger that calls us to live fully. “Sankofa in San Miguel” is a two-and-a-half-day workshop designed to help us discover what was left behind, the dream deferred, the lost self and the traps of fear.

Catherine Bryne and Marc Taylor blend their experiences in theater, music and psychology to help reveal and specify the longing for a courageous and authentic life now that we have the chance to live it.
