Mujeres en Cambio “in motion”
By Joan Strouse
If you want to do good, feel good and have good fun all at the same time, then join Anne Challamel every Saturday from 11:15am–12:15pm for DANCEmotion. In a sun-filled studio DANCEmotion participants travel on a global journey of free style movement and joy. The name of the class comes from Anne’s deep belief that dancing is a way to allow positive feelings to enter your life. Through DANCEmotion Anne promises that you will get lost in movement and discover great feelings and sensations. “Dancing heals worries and tensions. You change the way you feel by the way you move your body. You just can’t feel sad if you are moving your arms and skipping around. We have the means to change our moods with the postures we allow our bodies to have,” Anne explains.DANCEmotion Saturdays, 11:15am–12:15pm Homobono 17A (upstairs) Suggested donation 50 pesos for Mujeres en Cambio
Anne draws upon her vast collection of powerful music from around the world and selects tunes for each class session that will stimulate you to let go and get lost in movement. Anne is a dance aficionado and has been dancing since she was a child. “I’ve always had the need and the urge to move my body. As a young girl I began with improvisation and it helped develop my imagination. I have always sought out places to dance while living in Paris, London, New York and now San Miguel,” she says. Her enthusiasm is infectious and will inspire you to listen to the music and explore movement.
As the facilitator of DANCEmotion, Anne emphasizes that whatever it is that you are seeking from the class you will find. Whether you are looking to let go of anxiety, get some exercise, enjoy yourself, be with others, forget your troubles, be spontaneous, find a sense of freedom within your body or revisit your childhood, you will have that opportunity in DANCEmotion. Anne stresses that the class is a time exclusively for you to explore what your body wants to do.
No matter your age, body type, flexibility range, gender, dance training or fitness level, everyone is invited to put on some comfortable clothes and participate in DANCEmotion. There is no instruction given, no choreography to worry about, and no steps to learn. Anne emphasizes that the class, “is not about being graceful, coordinated, or beautiful; DANCEmotion is about having fun, feeling more confident in your body, and manifesting gratitude.”
Ms. Challamel asks that you give a 50-peso donation for the class. All of the money is given directly to Mujeres en Cambio, a nonprofit dedicated to keeping young women in school. Anne decided to contribute all of the donations from DANCEmotion to Mujeres en Cambio because she firmly believes that positive societal changes will come through the education of women. Additionally, Anne’s philosophy is that dance involves movement and she believes that education also involves movement, so for Anne, it is a great connection that DANCEmotion supports Mujeres en Cambio students. Mujeres en Cambio wholeheartedly concurs with Anne’s beliefs. Every year Mujeres en Cambio raises money to give scholarships to 150 academically gifted young women living in underserved rural communities around San Miguel. These highly qualified students are then able to stay in school to complete middle school, high school and college to further their personal and professional goals.
