The season kicks off with a fundraiser at Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, “Two Tenors Talk,” an evening of conversation and music with Metropolitan Opera star Michael Sylvester. Mr. Sylvester is one of the leading tenors of his generation, with starring performances at La Scala, Vienna, London, Venice, Buenos Aires, Chicago, San Francisco and many others of the world’s greatest opera houses. He will be interviewed by John Bills, Artistic Director of Opera San Miguel, himself a veteran of over 5,000 performances at the Metropolitan Opera. The lively conversation will be interspersed with videos of some of Mr. Sylvester’s signature performances, including “Nessun dorma” in Puccini’s Turandot. A benefit for Opera San Miguel’s scholarship program, the evening will begin with cocktails and complimentary botanas at 6pm on Thursday, March 6, at the Rosewood Ballroom.
The centerpiece of Opera San Miguel’s season is Concurso San Miguel 2014. Now in its sixth year, Opera San Miguel brings together the most promising and exciting young opera singers in Mexico for a gala concert and final round of its contest. This year the company will present career grants topping out at more than 200,000 pesos, which winners may use for advanced study and professional expenses. All prize money awarded is privately donated by individuals and businesses from San Miguel de Allende’s international community, principally a group of major donors know as “Los Ángeles de la Ópera,” whose extraordinary generosity fuels the company’s success. The final round of Concurso San Miguel 2014 will be held on March 8 at 7:30pm at Teatro Ángela Peralta.
Opera San Miguel’s 2014 season culminates on March 19 with the company’s first-ever Opera Gala.
In a celebration of
the talented young singers discovered through Concurso San Miguel, the evening brings together stars from 2008, the year of the first contest through 2014, with a full orchestra and chorus. “Rather than present the usual parade of arias and ensembles typical of opera galas,” says John Bills, “we are performing complete acts from three different masterpieces of the operatic repertoire, Rigoletto, Carmen and Aida.” He continues, “Our singers will be accompanied by the Orchestra and Chorus of the Conservatorio de Música de Celaya, conducted by its music director, Maestro Jesús Almanza. This concert is the result of a new and historic strategic collaboration with the conservatory.” Gala de Ópera will be presented at Teatro Ángela Peralta on Wednesday, March 19, at 8pm.
“We are so grateful to our donors and sponsors for making it possible for us to expand our programs on behalf of these deserving young artists,” says Bills. “I think it is fair to say that Opera San Miguel is not only unique in its mission and programs in Mexico, but it is also helping to elevate the quality and professionalism of opera performance in this country.”
