Cuban essence

Luis Gasca will be a special guest with the Gabriel Hernandez Cuban Trio. In the early ‘60, at the age of 20, Luis recorded on the number one hit “Cherry Pink” with world- famous Pérez Prado, the “King of the Mambo,” and toured Japan for one month, followed by two months at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas. While in New York City working with Mongo Santamaria, Watermelon Man, he recorded three albums on Columbia Records. He also played with Cuban superstar Celia Cruz, so he is certainly no stranger to Cuban music. Considered a “living legend” by many people throughout the world, he is one of the very few Mexican musicians (his parents born in Guanajuato, Luis in Houston, Texas) who transcend musical genres. Luis played as a soloist with the “big bands” of Count Basie, Woody Herman and Stan Kenton. In Rock & Roll, he recorded and played with Janis Joplin at Woodstock, Santana, Van Morrison, Grateful Dead and Dr. John. Other artists that he has played with include Tito Puente, Ray Charles, Tony Bennett, Julie London, and Jack Jones. His jazz albums include such luminary artists as Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson and Jack Dejohnette. To have Luis Gasca playing with the Gabriel Hernández Cuban Trio, we can see why it will be a very nice musical evening.
