“The Sound of San Miguel,” a fundraiser for Opera San Miguel’s scholarship program, was one of those magical evenings that can only happen here. Judy and Jack Hadlock’s lovely home glowed with candlelight while guests enjoyed traditional Mexican botanas and cocktails, and the music of the incomparable guitarist, Gil Gutiérrez, with jazz pianist Gabriel Hernández and percussionist Kimani Carrazana, and joined by Opera San Miguel discovery, soprano Adriana Valdés, in an eclectic mix of jazz, tango and Mexican songs. All followed by a delicious sit-down dinner.
OSM Artistic Director, John Bills, recounted a long list of international successes by the gifted young Mexican opera singers that Concurso San Miguel has discovered and assisted since its first contest in 2008. “Your support of these remarkable young artists is turning promise into genuine accomplishments,” he told the enthusiastic group of 50 guests lucky enough to secure a place for this memorable night. Many of those in attendance were “Angels of the Opera,” the company’s major donors and the engine behind its success. Teatro Ángela Peralta will be the venue for Concurso San Miguel 2014 on March 8 at 7:30pm; and the company’s first-ever Opera Gala, featuring stars of Concurso 2008 through 2014 performing with full orchestra and chorus, on March 19 at 8:00pm. Tickets available at the box office starting Feb. 21.
