Come and get it where it’s hot

A year has gone by since my partner Jerry and I decided to host our first Chili Festival in our secluded, patio-set restaurant, La Frontera. To the many San Miguel residents and yearly visitors’ disappointment, the enormous, internationally acclaimed Chili Cook-Off that had been held annually in the Hotel Real de Minas had been cancelled, and no one seemed to picking up the ball. So, why not us? Here we have space. Here we have parking. We always participated in and enjoyed the Chili Cook-Off. So, in our impromptu, low-hype manner, we ran with it. And it was a hit!

OK, you could count the number of chili cooks on two hands, but the general consensus was that more isn’t always better. It was a beautiful February afternoon; there was live music and mingling. Everyone tasted. They voted: people’s choice only, no judges, no rules. We provided an all-you-can-eat buffet of hot dogs, beans, salads and house chili to compliment the chili tasting and assure that no one would leave hungry. To close the event, there was a dramatic reception of third place that went to Glenn Griffin (well known as Don Day), second place to Rodrigo Murillo, and the first place prize cazuela to Collier Kear. All cooks took home their Chili-fest aprons.

This year we expect no less. David Garza and Billy Parker will be performing. We hope to have a few more Chili cooks than last year, so if you are interested in being one of the participating cooks, stop by to sign up. We extend the invitation to all to gather and warm up to spring with some spicy fun!
