Audubon winter outing to Rancho La Joyita and Dos Búhos Winery

By Gordon Fulton

Join Audubon for our wonderful winter outing on Sunday, March 2. We’ll be journeying to Rancho La Joyita high in volcanic country to the south of Jalpa, where we’ve been invited by Roger and Rosanna Jones of Via Organica to take a morning nature walk, followed by a delicious comida at Dos Búhos winery.

Nature and Culture Day Tour
Audubon Winter Outing to Rancho La Joyita and Dos Búhos Winery
Sun, Mar 2, 9:45am
Meet at St Paul’s Church for ride-sharing
500 pesos Audubon members; 550 pesos
Deadline to register for this event is 6pm, Monday, February 24

Although the winter dry season may mean less abundant birds or flowers, careful observation yields many plants and trees that are beginning to wake as the days become longer. On our nature walk we’ll be accompanied by several guides, including Norman Besman, a senior birder with Audubon; Mario Mendoza, past director of the Charco del Ingenio; and Diane Varney, a graduate botanist who will help to point out and interpret the fascinating geological landscape, and the flora and fauna. The palo muerto (morning glory tree) should be in full bloom. Near the hillside springs, we’ll look for hardy local birds and migrating birds. There will be several walks to choose from ranging from easy to moderately difficult, or you can just relax and enjoy the beautiful view across the Jalpa Valley.

After our walk, we’ll reform into caravans and head to the Dos Búhos (two owls) Winery for our comida. Owner and wine maker Diana Maycotte will introduce us to her boutique winery and offer a tasting of five different organic artisanal wines for 50 pesos.

The comida will be a traditional paella prepared on-site by El Asador Catalan. There will be two types of paella, traditional Valenciana and vegetarian, accompanied by a green salad with poached pears for dessert.

Dos Búhos wine will be available by the glass or the bottle, or you may bring your own bottle of wine to enjoy. Good things are coming in twos for this outing. As a special treat we will be joined by Mark Taylor, owner of Dos Aves Brewery, maker of handcrafted ales who will have beers available for sale.
