Guadalupe Open Studios
By Jade Arroyo
In colonia Guadalupe there is a strong artistic community, a group who offered last weekend, February 1 and 2, a collective open studio and tour, such as you might find in the art districts of Chelsea or Noho. The tour was enhanced with refreshments, snacks and conversation, and the attendees, maps in hand, strolled the colonia at a relaxed pace. This was the second edition of the Guadalupe Open Studios (the first was in June 2012), further establishing this area as an art zone and affording an opportunity for those who came to see the beautiful graffiti murals done by several artists on the neighborhood’s walls, organized by “Muros en Blanco,” a group that promotes urban art. The participating artists were Joy Wesson, Karen Wight, Isis Rodríguez, Susan Dorf, Janelle Pietzak, Sam Seaman, Diana Varney, Colleen Sorensen, Danny Cameron and Lulu Torbet, who showed their finished work to the public as well as pieces in progress.
