Great benefits of volunteering in San Miguel de Allende
By Katelin Cannon
In addition to being Condé Nast Traveler’s most recent “Number One City in the World” via the Readers’ Choice Awards and being a top tourist destination worldwide, San Miguel de Allende is a town full of worthwhile causes and great opportunities to get involved in the community.First annual Volunteer Fair Thu and Fri, Feb 20 and 21, 10am–4pm La Biblioteca Insurgentes 25
San Miguel has over 100 registered nonprofit organizations working in areas such as education, the environment, protection of animals, arts & culture, disability services, and healthcare. These nonprofit organizations, which change countless lives and create jobs for the local economy, benefit from and depend on many thousands of hours of volunteer support annually.
Volunteers in San Miguel don’t just give of their time and talents—volunteering has benefits for them, too.
A 2007 report published by The Corporation for National & Community service in Washington, D.C. detailed growing evidence that volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social benefits. The report claims: “A study of the longitudinal data from the Americans’ Changing Lives survey found a positive relationship between volunteering activities and better health outcomes among adults over the age of 60, including higher levels of self-reported health and physical functioning, and lower levels of depression…” in addition to the knowledge that they have greatly helped their community. (Morrow-Howell et al., 2003).
Anyone interested in giving back to the community by volunteering can meet nonprofit representatives and find out more about local opportunities by visiting the Volunteer Fair, February 20 and 21 from 10am–4pm at La Biblioteca (Insurgentes 25, Centro). Those able to give of their time—whether short- or long-term or part- or full-time—are encouraged to attend.
The Volunteer Fair is hosted by La Biblioteca (www.bibliotecasma.com) and sponsored by Volunteer San Miguel (www.volunteersanmiguel.com) and admission is free.
Nonprofit organizations wishing to register for a booth at the Volunteer Fair can do so at La Biblioteca reception window Monday through Friday between 12pm and 5pm or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
