Danzón: Candelaria con cadencia

By Leonardo Rosen

As we have done for years, the Club de Danzón “Mercerina” presents: “El Danzón y Otros Ritmos Bailables” as part of San Miguel de Allende’s famous Feria de la Candelaria 2014. This year, to paraphrase the Beatles, “We get by with a lot of help from our friends.” That is to say, there will be live music for your dancing pleasure provided by our old favorite, the Orquesta Marimba Tono 13. There is nothing like the happy sound of a fine marimba band, especially one as versatile as Tono 13. We thank the Dirección de Medio Ambiente y Ecología of San Miguel for making this possible.

Sun, Feb 2 and Sun, Feb 9, 1-3, 5-7pm
Parque Juárez

We appear in the Parque Juárez on Sunday, February 2, and on Sunday, February 9, with two shows, 1-3pm and 5-7pm, on both dates. Admission is free. However, we do hope that you buy some of the beautiful plants and flowers that are exhibited by vendors all over the park. The Feria de la Candelaria is a feast for the senses, a definite “don’t miss.” For further information, please call 152-9600 (Ecología) and 154-5840 (Leonardo Rosen).

Changing the subject for a moment: If you look through the big new book of photographs of this city, San Miguel de Allende: La Buena Hospitalidad (Atención, January 18), please turn to page 57. You will find a large color photograph of Dr. Claudia Llanas and me dancing the danzón in the kiosco of the Jardín Principal. Muchas gracias to Lic. Jorge Olalde, owner of the hotel, Casa de los Soles, for recently showing this to me. Before that, we had no idea that we appeared in the book. Please join us in celebrating the beauty of nature with music and dance. After all, there is a danzón entitled “Florecita!”
