Hot cars and a historic estate in Sussex
The Goodwood Estate, located in the sumptuous countryside of Sussex (about 90 minutes southeast of London), is an ideal area to tour in a fine car.
Home to the Dukes of Richmond for more than three centuries, the Goodwood Estate pays homage to the ninth Duke’s love of motor racing by offering guests a chance to hire a classic sports car, including an E-Type Jag or an Austin Healey (both James Bond favorites) or maybe a Rolls Royce.
The ninth Duke built a motor racing track on the grounds and guests can also opt to try out cars on a professional track. Prices begin at £55 to test cars on the track.
Gleneagles readies for the Ryder Cup
The 40th Ryder Cup is coming to Scotland’s Gleneagles PGA Centenary Course on September 26-28, 2014. VisitScotland believes the event will bring 250,000 visitors (10 percent of them American) to Gleneagles.
The Scots are investing about 10 million pounds in promoting the event. They can count on millions of viewers to watch the Ryder Cup in which American pros play a European team. In December, Glasgow will also host the Duel in the Pool, a Ryder Cup-style swimming event pitting European swimmers against US swimmers.
The course underwent an extensive set of improvements under the directions of its original designer, Jack Nicklaus. Over 50,000 tons of earth was moved, 30,000 square meters of turf laid and 1,000 tons of new sand used in the bunkers. And the Gleneagles Resort just completed a US$1.6 million renovation.
