Sociedad Audubon coordinating kayak purchases
By Linda Whynman
Having the Presa Allende and the Río Laja located practically outside our back door are wonderful assets to living in the high desert environment of San Miguel. Taking a walk along these waterways is enjoyable, but it doesn’t quite compare to being out on the water experiencing its quiet beauty, the myriad birds and butterflies, and the companionship of fellow paddlers as you glide along in your kayak. After a few hours you return to shore feeling refreshed and re-energized.
For two years now Audubon de Mexico has been helping people get out on the water and connect with nature by organizing a group purchase of Perception recreational kayaks. This time we are offering four models to choose from; each is lightweight and easy to handle, nearly indestructible, and super stable in the water. We are taking kayak orders until January 31 with delivery anticipated in late February, just in time for the spring bird migration (there are over 40 species of birds found on the Presa.)
A “get to know your kayak” workshop to introduce new paddlers to their boats and provide tips to make kayaking easy will be offered shortly after the boats arrive. Once you have your boat, you’ll be invited by Audubon and Amigos de la Presa to join in our group outings, including star-gazing and full moon paddles.
If you’re wondering where you might store your kayak, Amigos de la Presa has a boathouse near the Presa with space available at a very reasonable rate. Contact Mike Lambert at firstname.lastname@example.org. If you will not be in town in February to receive delivery of your kayak, we can arrange to store your boat until you return.
We hope you’ll become a part of our growing San Miguel kayak flotilla!
