American Airlines has selected Leon’s International Airport (BJX) as a stop for its first Airbus 319, part of its worldwide fleet. On the afternoon of January 8 American Airlines Flight 1579 landed for the first time at BJX. It was the first commercial flight of the new Airbus 319 into Mexico. The flight took off from Dallas–Fort Worth airport (DFW) in Texas. Guanajuato, according to the Secretary of Touristic Development in Guanajuato, Fernando Olivera, was the choice of the airline owing to the state’s great industrial and residential development, which is expected to grow.
Before the plane landed Antonia Gutiérrez, director of the airline in Mexico, expressed her happiness at the arrival of the flight because it represents great achievements for the company for several reasons. First, she said, because it was part of the effort started in 2012 to change the whole fleet to be the most modern and efficient of commercial airlines, and second because the arrival of this new airbus represents the interest of the airline in improving the client’s experience of flying. Finally, she said they are expecting to increase the number of seats in this airport.
Gutiérrez, who commented that American Airlines started operations in León 20 years ago, said that guanajuatenses should be proud and the airline chose BJX as a destination because they will bring more passengers and there will be more promotion for the state.
The airbus 319 covers the route DFW–BJX with two daily flights. The weekly number of seats available increased to 1,792. This model of plane has 128 seats, 8 in executive class and 120 in coach.
One of every three passengers who arrives at BJX is from overseas.
Last year, more than 983,000 passengers traveled through BJX.
Guanajuato is the sixth most visited state in the country.
In 2013, the state received 20.5 million visitors.
