Taking an immersion in San Miguel

If you happen to visit San Miguel for the first time  —but probably not the last— and you want to experience the places most liked by the locals and perhaps make some new friends, here is a suggested route to spend a perfect day in town. Enjoy!

Let’s begin the day in the best way at La Mesa Grande. This place is one of everyone’s favorite spots for breakfast; the hand-crafted bread is fantastic: fresh, well-made and absolutely delicious. Try to pair it with coffee (from espresso to latte to everything in between), a multitude of teas and other choices of beverages. Besides the baked goodies, there are also other options such as fruit, yogurt or eggs. Located at the corner of Zacateros and Pila Seca.

Certainly the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel (Saint Michael) is the most iconic building in the city, and one of the most photographed in the country. Its construction dates from the 17th century, but it wasn’t until 1880 that it got its characteristic façade, thanks to the imagination of Zeferino Gutierrez. The inside of the church is just as stunning and holds many antique figures of saints and paintings. The pink sandstone church with its marvelous architecture as well as its location make it the perfect place to start a walk around town.

A great place to see art is the design center Fábrica La Aurora (Calzada de la Aurora s/n). One of the reasons why San Miguel is so famous is because of its strong artistic community. This center holds over 40 different galleries, studios and shops. You can see a wide spectrum of art: paintings, sculptures, photography, fashion, antiques and much more. There’s also a cafe to take a break and enjoy a good cup of coffee. Open daily 10am-6pm.

The contemporary terrace-bar at Matilda (Aldama 53) is a super pleasant place to end the day. The interior design is quite interesting, showcasing the work of Mexican and international artists. Bar service is impeccable and there’s a menu of savory tapas to pair with your drink. If you happen to go on a Thursday night, resident DJ Papacheko will create an amusing evening.
