Coming together to support Mariposas San Miguel
By Jade Arroyo
Mariposas San Miguel is a local enterprise that promotes the development and skills of female textile artisans in the rural community of San Antonio de la Joya (located 30 minutes from town, toward Guanajuato). Based on the tenets of fair trade (fair prices and wages, democracy, dignity, ecology and transparency), Mariposas San Miguel supports embroidery and sewing as an economic alternative for the women from this community. The project embraces the values of autonomy, dignity, respect for creative freedom and equality and gives the women a chance to work in an area where employment is very scarce and to stay at home with their children.
On December 15, a special concert was held at Café Monet to raise funds for this amazing all-women-run project. Everything raised went to the purchase of blankets, coats and Christmas toys and gifts for the children in the community of San Antonio.
That Sunday afternoon was filled with laughter and good friends. Music was by Lynx Bigtooth Maple (playing a selection by The Beatles, Elton John, Billy Joel and more); Rosa Guadalupe, who played guitar and sang beautiful Mexican music; and Fredric Dannen on piano. Another major project of Mariposas San Miguel is finishing the construction of the community center, which will provide the women’s cooperative a place to hold workshops and have more sewing machines and materials on site, without having to leave their community. Mariposas San Miguel plans to organize more events to realize this long-term dream.
