A holiday gift that keeps on giving
By Irene de León
Wonder what to give to that person who has everything? Well, consider a scholarship donation to Ernestina. She is a resident at Casa Hogar Santa Julia, a home for girls from precarious family circumstances. In her case, her mom died in childbirth.
Ernestina will be graduating from high school in May 2014. Because of her excellent grades, she is on scholarship at a well-known local private school. She wants to continue her education as a chef. She wants to stay in San Miguel to be close to her sister at Santa Julia; but Ernestina is turning 18 and wants to leave Santa Julia to become more independent, so she is hoping someone is looking for a great housemate.
I have known Ernestina for almost eight years and can honestly say that she has an outstanding personality full of responsibility and maturity. There are three other girls who have left Santa Julia and are successfully continuing their education and are proving that they can break the chain of poverty and dependency that so many girls face. Let’s help Ernestina be the next to discover how to fly with her own wings!
A three-year degree from the University of León is 10,280 pesos (3,427 pesos/year). This includes books, virtual library, and additional expenses.
Please consider donating in behalf of a loved one. All US and Canadian donations are tax deductible. Please call me at 154-4117 or email me at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Thank you for giving the gift that keeps on giving!
