Give the gift of English to someone you know
By Laetitia Knight
Now is your chance to give the gift of English to someone you know—whether friend, student, business proprietor or employee. Anyone who works or socializes with English-speaking visitors, tourists or residents can benefit from speaking their language. Jóvenes Adelante will launch its second English as a Second Language course in January, with registration and placement tests on three Saturdays starting tomorrow, the 14th—the perfect holiday gift, and one that keeps on giving.

Jóvenes Adelante is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help talented Mexican youth pursue higher education and develop life and work skills. We developed the interactive ESL course because we know the challenges our students face. Employers in San Miguel are looking for English speakers. In the wider world, getting hired by any of Mexico’s large companies today requires proficiency in English. The ESL course will be offered to Jóvenes Adelante scholarship students as well as to the wider community of workers, business people, homemakers and house staff. Through this initiative, Jóvenes Adelante hopes to fund from two to five new university scholarships for five years.
Classes are conducted by native speakers, certified and highly experienced ESL instructors from the US and Canada. The curriculum follows the Common Framework for European Languages that is internationally recognized. Students who pass the final test will obtain a Certificate of Attendance and a Diploma of Proficiency in their level.
What makes this course unique is its enrichment program. After the regular class, students can opt to stay for an additional hour of conversation with native speakers or for individual help and attention from a teacher. All students are exposed to three different teachers, getting used to various accents and male and female voices.
The courses are offered at beginner, intermediate and pre-advanced levels. Classes are held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am-1am, 2-4pm and 6-8pm at Plaza Primavera, Salida a Querétaro. Two consecutive, cumulative five-week sessions start on January 13th and February 17th. To maximize their progress, some students have already signed up for all 10 weeks.
Tuition is just 1,850 pesos for one 45-hour, five-week session and 3,100 pesos for the full, 90-hour, 10-week course, a saving of 600 pesos.
A Jóvenes Adelante “Jump Start ESL” Gift Certificate is the perfect way to help someone acquire essential English skills while helping the organization reach its fundraising goal. We also have group rates, providing one free seat for every five paying students. Jóvenes Adelante members and volunteers can register two people of their choice for the price of one-and-a-half seats.
Seats are limited, so don’t wait! For more information, come to the Jóvenes Adelante office, call the secretary at 150-0030 or visit the website at www.jovenesadelante.org.
