What the world needs now, is love, sweet love

By Robin Loving Rowland

Many among us would agree with internationally acclaimed local artist, author, critic, lecturer, poet, performer, scholar Bea Aaronson that we must repair our torn societies. But how? Love is the answer, as all in attendance will learn at her free public presentation to Rotary Tuesday, December 10, at 12:30pm at Hotel Real de Minas, Ancha de San Antonio at Stirling Dickinson.

Many questions will be asked such as: Is love a physical adventure where the heart does not have much to say, or a spiritual adventure where the body does not have much to say? Is love a word that lies or a word that tells the truth?

Love is indeed multi-faceted, clearly divided in all cultures between the earthly pleasures of the flesh, and the spiritual pleasures of the soul, but always involving the other; and, the first other being ourself, we have to love ourselves in order to love others.

The ultimate form of love is altruism activated by empathy. Altruistic love is a cosmic transformer, a mediating force, an energy we can all cultivate and harness, The energy we need most today in order to fight indifference, greed, prejudice and injustice, according to Aaronson.

She will talk about the celebration of caress.  A caress is not only an action of romantic love, but also an action of altruistic love. To caress with thoughts, with words, with caring actions, to caress a lonely wounded soul, is to have compassion. “We must rebuild our humanity, based on compassion and empathy,” says Aaronson.

Aaroson has a bachelor’s degree in art history, a master’s degree in the art of French literature, and a doctorate in philosophy and comparative literature. She has published many things, one of which is now the property of Harvard’s private book collection. Aaronson has exhibited her work in Africa, Europe, Lebanon, Mexico and the United States. She may be reached at 121-1026,,
