We need your help!

By Lynn Weisberg

What do you do when you find a homeless, starving, unwanted dog or cat in San Miguel? Many people contact the SPA. For over 30 years, we have been committed to maintaining a refuge for animals who can’t ask for help themselves. Thanks to our supporters who contribute via donations, membership dues, casita sponsorships, supporting our fundraisers, and bequests, our nonprofit no-kill shelter is able to house approximately 100 animals and has over 200 adoptions per year to loving homes. We also operate a low-cost veterinary clinic and provide education and community service opportunities to children in our area.

Donations make it possible for us to care for animals like Susie and Jackson. Susie appeared at the SPA all alone almost three years ago, very pregnant and with multiple scars on her face from dog attacks. She gave birth to nine puppies during her first night with us and is the “mother” to our younger dogs, supervising them during their play times. She is still waiting for her forever home. Jackson was found severely malnourished with no fur on his body, only a tuft of fur on his head and tail. We didn’t think he would live, but with proper care and plenty of food, he is now a beautiful, playful cat, fully recovered, who wants only to be in a home of his own.

The cost of caring for our animals and our clients’ beloved pets is more than 2,000,000 pesos per year. Our major expenses are food, medications, and litter for shelter animals; clinic medical supplies, lab costs, and equipment; facility maintenance; cleaning costs for our population of cats and dogs; office supplies; and salaries. Monthly operating expenses always exceed our income. Without donations, we would not be able to keep our doors open.

In today’s economy with increasing costs of the items we need to exist, we count on donors’ support — now more than ever. Please consider donating as much as you can to the SPA. You may pay by check or pay online http://www.spasanmiguel.org/how-you-can-help/support-fundraising/. Checks made payable to “Sociedad Protectora de Animales” (for a Mexican tax-deductible donation) or “San Miguel Community Foundation” (for a US tax-deductible donation) may be dropped off at the SPA or any La Conexion location (marked “SPA, PMB 18”). Know that every peso or dollar you contribute will go to helping our animals and keeping the SPA operational. Thank you!
