Recent work in Casa Diana Gallery: Artemio Sepúlveda – Nudes & Diana Friedeberg – Collages

By Carmen Gutiérrez

Artemio Sepulveda (Los Rodriguez, N.L. 1937) presents his most recent body of work. The collection is composed of a dozen mixed media paintings of medium size where he explores the sensuality and eroticism of the female form. His singular expressionistic style captivates the spectator’s senses through form, line, and color. When one looks at these artistic representations of nudes, one participates in the flesh, taste, and sound. The observer’s senses retrieve emotions related to Eros from the depths of the psyche. Artemio was a disciple of David Alfaro Siqueiros. He also posed as a model -the miner- for the mural that the master did in the building of La Raza. In 1962 he belonged to the group ‘Nueva Presencia’ alongside José Luis Cuevas, Francisco Corzas, Francisco Icaza, Arnold Belkin, Leonel Góngora, Rafael Coronel and José Muñoz who consider him a magnificent portraitist who cannot go unnoticed.

Growing up in San Miguel de Allende as the daughter of two artists, Diana Friedeberg received strong artistic influence her whole life. Early on she knew that Art would inevitably be a great part of her life not only because of her parents, but also because of her insatiable need for expression and creative stimulation. Yet instead of devoting herself to art at an early age, she decided to explore new territories: she moved to the US where she studied biology and continued on to do graduate work in neuroscience. Now, six years later, she returns to San Miguel with the invitation to incorporate art more consciously into her life. As Diana often says: “I might have married Science, but I will always have an affair with Art.” Her current work tells us of her love of Mexico and a search for cultural identity. It also deals with love, desire and a plethora of other human emotions that lured her interest in neuroscience and continue to intrigue her today.

The exhibition will open with a cocktail in Galería Casa Diana on Saturday, December 14 at 5pm. Recreo 48 tel: 152-0885.
