New Magenta Gallery artist
By Patricia Bogert Miller
Painter Robert Long, a new member of Magenta Gallery December 1, has been visiting San Miguel de Allende since the 1960’s. As a child he studied at the Institute and Bellas Artes and moved to San Miguel full time in 2011.
Rob studied art and chemistry in college and received his MBA from the University of Chicago. He went on to have a career in business, but always wanted to return to San Miguel and painting. He, his wife and kids have vacationed in San Miguel since the 1970’s.
“The things I see each day, as people go about their lives, hold special value to me,” he said. They are how I understand the world. San Miguel offers a never-ending source of this inspiration.”
Working in oils, along with everyday scenes Rob uses local celebrations as rich visual references. “People are often dressed in dramatic clothing offering aesthetic appeal and whimsical quality,” he said. “I strive to create an intimacy and honesty with regard to these subjects. Also, to capture the curious psychology of scenes, as people interact with one another and their surroundings.”
He added: “A good painting takes the ordinary or commonplace and transforms it into a higher reality with greater importance. A work like that gets a certain life of its own and somehow is beyond the subject itself.”
Rob’s opening reception will be January 25 at Magenta Gallery, Zacateros 26. To see his work, go to www.magentagallery.com or stop by the gallery on Sundays to visit with him. Gallery hours are 11–6pm Monday, Wednesday–Saturday and 11–4pm Sundays. Closed Tuesdays.
